Being still, one finds all arises spontaneously, effortlessly.
Thus for me, the distinction between a religious life and a spiritual life is spontaneity.
Hence, when anyone considered a teacher says that the key to religious or spiritual living is to bind the mind, be that so as to build virtue or to gain discrimination or even so as to “stay centered,” I look well for any spontaneity in that speaker. 
Where there is mind-control without spontaneity, student-prisoners abide.
