Qitmir: Perhaps this re-wording will help clarify the idea: “If you pray _only_ when you’re in trouble… maybe you’ve been in trouble for a while longer than you think." 

(more: Because a muslim is enjoined to pray five times a day, an attentive muslim will interrupt even the constant prayer in order to say those obligatory five prayers. Hence if one prays ONLY when worried, then prayer heretofore surely has been neither consistent or obedient or heartfelt. Such waywardness is "asking for trouble” –and yes, perhaps that is a “divine nudge” back into the clear path, as may be inferred from your comment.) Does this help?
