When I was a boy I was taught that shortly after the Curies published their initial findings on radium, scientists in the USA could not duplicate the results, and so asked the Curies to send a sample, which the Curies did. The tests which followed receipt in the USA worked as the Curies had specified, as did all other USA radium samples thereafter.

I have often wondered, was it that our scientists were not following instructions the first time, or was it that the stubborn American radium went through way heavy changes after snuggling with that hot foreign element.
