NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS – Let the Bells Ring (Nick Cave/Warren Ellis)
from Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus (2004)

Cave’s rousing tribute to Johnny Cash.

{a tribute to JC?… mmmm yes, guyatree thinks this is a tribute to JC, the carpenter’s boy)

C’mon, kind Sir, let’s walk outside
And breathe the autumn air
See the many that have lived and died
See the unending golden stair
See all of us that have come behind
Clutching at your hem
All the way from Arkansas
To your sweet and last amen.

photograph of a pile of buffalo (american bison) skulls waiting to be ground for fertilizer, mid 1870s.

i had always read that the motivation for the slaughter of buffalo in the 19th century was the price of buffalo hides. while that definitely was a motivation, there was another: to force the Indians to subsist on handouts from the government. for as long as they could feed themselves through their own efforts, what need did they have of the government’s “benevolence”?

“Better to kill the buffalo than have him feed the Sioux.”
